The Barlow is one of the oldest pocket knife patterns in existence — a design that dates back to 17th-century England and has been in continuous production at Case's Bradford, Pennsylvania factory since the early 1900s. The XR Barlow is what happens when Case takes that century-old silhouette and rebuilds it from the inside out with modern materials. The result is the same iconic tapering shape and nail nick opener you expect from a traditional Barlow, now running CPM S35VN steel, Richlite handle scales, and G-10 liners and bolsters. The 53165 Luna Richlite version pairs a light-toned Richlite handle with an oversized black G-10 bolster engraved with Case's signature "XX" mark — a combination that looks clean, carries light, and works hard.
The 2.5-inch clip point blade is CPM S35VN stainless steel with a stonewash satin finish. S35VN has become the benchmark for premium production knife steel — excellent edge retention, superior toughness compared to its predecessor S30V, and corrosion resistance that holds up in real carry conditions. At 1.3 ounces this knife is almost weightless in a pocket, and the Richlite handle gives you real grip in wet or dry conditions. Richlite is a paper-phenolic composite — denser than wood, more stable than most natural materials, and completely impervious to moisture and temperature changes. It is the material Case chose specifically because it performs better than the bone and stag it replaced without losing the traditional look.
The XR Barlow is a slip joint — no locking mechanism, traditional operation, and legal to carry in more places than a locked folder.
