TOPS Knives was founded in 1998 by special forces veterans who were frustrated with the compromises built into standard-issue military blades. The Ranger's Edge is one of the direct expressions of that mandate: a purpose-built double-edge dagger documented by MSG Kim Breed, 5th Special Forces (RET.), in a Blade Magazine article on knives carried in Afghanistan. When a knife gets mentioned by name in a combat account, the design isn't theoretical.

The blade is 5.50" of 1095 high carbon steel — the workhorse alloy that TOPS has trusted across their lineup because it delivers exactly what field use demands: toughness that resists chipping under impact, easy resharpening in the field on whatever's available, and a reliable differential heat treatment that gives the edge the hardness it needs without making the body brittle. RC 56–58 is the sweet spot for a blade like this — hard enough to hold an edge through hard use, not so hard that it becomes unpredictable under stress. The blade is symmetrically ground in a dagger profile, with one plain edge and one partially serrated edge for cutting through tough, fibrous materials. Black Traction Coating provides corrosion resistance, non-reflective matte finish, and reduced glare. At 0.190" thick, the blade retains mass at center for durability while still delivering effective piercing geometry.

The handle is black linen Micarta over white liners — a material combination that provides serious wet-hand grip traction, weathers exposure without degrading, and looks exactly like a working knife rather than a display piece. Jimping runs along both the top and bottom of the handle as well as on the guards, giving multiple secure purchase points across different grip positions. The full tang extends past the handle as an exposed pommel — functional as a pry tool, glass breaker, and impact device, with a lanyard hole at the tip.
