Carpenter CTS-204P Knives: American-Made Super Steel with Elite Edge Retention & Corrosion Resistance
Carpenter CTS-204P is one of the three steels that make up the elite super steel tier that knife enthusiasts call the "trinity" — alongside Bohler M390 and CPM 20CV. Produced by Carpenter Technology Corporation, one of America's most respected specialty steel manufacturers, CTS-204P is made using a powder metallurgy process that produces an exceptionally fine, uniform carbide structure — the foundation of its world-class cutting performance. The alloy composition is virtually identical to M390 and 20CV, with a high carbon content around 1.90% and a chromium content near 20%, delivering the same combination of outstanding edge retention, excellent corrosion resistance, and superior wear resistance that has made this entire class of steels the benchmark for premium production knives.
In real-world use, a well heat-treated CTS-204P blade holds a keen working edge through demanding cutting tasks, shrugs off moisture and corrosion in everyday environments, and takes a beautiful polish that makes it as visually impressive as it is functional. Like its M390 and 20CV counterparts, CTS-204P requires more effort to sharpen from scratch than mid-tier steels — diamond or ceramic abrasives are recommended for reprofiling — but routine edge touch-up on a strop or fine ceramic rod keeps it performing at its best between full sharpenings.
