OTF stands for out-the-front — the blade deploys and retracts axially through an opening in the front of the handle rather than folding open like a conventional folder. On the Kershaw Livewire, push the slider on the spine forward to deploy the blade and push it back to retract. The blade locks positively when fully deployed and retracts cleanly on the return stroke. On the 9000TCF, the tanto blade deploys on the OTF axis — the reinforced chisel-ground tanto tip is the first thing through the housing opening at full extension, pointed directly forward. OTF automatic knives are subject to strict regulation under federal and state law. Under federal law, the interstate sale and transport of automatic knives — including OTF knives — is restricted. The 9000TCF and 9000TCFDAM are both carbon fiber tanto Livewire OTF variants with the same tanto geometry, OTF deployment, and USA manufacture in Tualatin, Oregon. The difference is blade steel and finish. The 9000TCF uses CPM MagnaCut — the benchmark alloy engineered by Larrin Thomas, outperforming CPM-S35VN and M390 in edge retention, toughness, and corrosion resistance simultaneously — in a satin finish that delivers a uniform, reflective blade surface. The 9000TCFDAM uses Damascus steel — forge-welded layered alloys that produce a pattern unique to each blade, revealed through acid etching. CPM MagnaCut delivers more predictable and measurable performance; Damascus delivers a visually unique pattern per blade and requires more active moisture maintenance. The Livewire carbon fiber sub-family now spans five variants, all USA made. The 9000TCF runs CPM MagnaCut satin tanto on carbon fiber — the CPM MagnaCut tanto carbon fiber OTF. The 9000CF runs CPM MagnaCut two-tone spear point on black carbon fiber — the CPM MagnaCut spear point carbon fiber OTF. The 9000CFBLU runs CPM MagnaCut stonewash spear point on blue-black carbon fiber — the stonewash spear point CF option. The 9000TCFDAM runs Damascus tanto on carbon fiber — Damascus tanto in the premium handle. The 9000DECFDAM runs Damascus spear point on carbon fiber — Damascus spear point in the premium handle. The 9000TCF is the only CPM MagnaCut satin tanto carbon fiber OTF in the series.

Satin is a mechanically polished finish that produces a smooth, uniform, moderately reflective surface across the blade face. It shows the steel's color cleanly — on CPM MagnaCut, a bright silver — without the directional matte texture of stonewash or the dark coating layer of blackwash. Against the carbon fiber handle's directional crosshatch weave, the satin blade creates a smooth-versus-woven visual contrast: a bright, clean blade face alongside a textured, patterned handle. Satin is more reflective than stonewash, more visible in low light, and more susceptible to showing fine scratches from hard carry — it shows handling marks more readily than a stonewash finish but maintains its reflective character over time. The satin finish on the 9000TCF's CPM MagnaCut blade has no coating layer, meaning the steel's near-H1 corrosion resistance is the primary moisture protection.

A tanto blade features a primary edge that runs parallel to the spine until it meets a chisel-ground secondary edge that angles down to the tip at approximately 60–70 degrees. This geometry creates a reinforced tip that concentrates force into a very small contact area — the most effective blade profile for penetration through hard materials. In an OTF automatic, the tanto tip is particularly well-matched to the deployment format: the blade fires on axis, the reinforced tip is immediately in position at full extension with no wrist adjustment required. The secondary edge adds a functional cutting surface along the tip section.

Kershaw offers a lifetime warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. If the knife fails due to a manufacturing defect, Kershaw will repair or replace it at no charge.
