The only feature that breaks the all-black profile is the tritium push button, a self-illuminating vial that glows in darkness without batteries. Standard TR-5 models carry branding and logo etchings; the Operator Edition removes everything that isn't functional.

CPM-S35VN is a Crucible Particle Metallurgy stainless steel formulated for a balanced combination of edge retention, toughness, and corrosion resistance. It holds a working edge longer than 154CM or AUS-8 while remaining significantly easier to sharpen than M390 or CTS-204P. For an automatic carry knife that may see demanding daily use, CPM-S35VN is a practical choice that doesn't require exotic sharpening equipment.

Tritium is a radioactive isotope of hydrogen that emits low-level beta radiation, causing a phosphor coating inside a sealed glass vial to glow continuously. The vial is inlaid into the push button of the T503-Operator, making the button visible in complete darkness without any external light source, charging, or batteries. Tritium vials have a half-life of approximately 12 years, so the glow gradually dims over time but remains functional for many years of carry.

The slide safety is a physical lock that blocks the push button from being depressed. With the safety engaged, the knife cannot be deployed even under pressure. This is the standard carry configuration for push-button automatics — safety on in the pocket, disengaged when the knife needs to be used. The TR-5 Operator's slide safety sits on the handle spine and can be operated with the thumb.
