The honest answer depends on hand size and carry preference — but the Paramilitary 2 is the most defensible choice for most people. With a 3.44-inch CPM S45VN blade, Compression Lock, and G10 scales made in Golden, Colorado, it represents the best-rounded EDC folder at its price point from any manufacturer. If the PM2 is too large, the Para 3 delivers the same lock, steel, and construction in a more compact 3.0-inch format. For buyers who prioritize weight above all else, the Para 3 Lightweight comes in under 2.4 oz with an FRN handle.

The Compression Lock is Spyderco's own patented locking mechanism — used in the Paramilitary 2, Para 3, Military 2, and Shaman. Unlike a liner lock or frame lock (which engage the tang of the blade), the Compression Lock bears against the blade spine. Closing force from cutting actually increases the lock's engagement rather than working against it. To close, you press the lock bar inward from outside the blade path — meaning your fingers are never in the path of the closing blade.

The result is a lock that is simultaneously stronger under hard cutting loads and safer to close than most conventional designs. It can be operated one-handed from either side with practice. It is the primary reason the PM2 and Para 3 are so widely recommended by people who actually use knives hard.

Both are limited-production variations of existing Spyderco models in premium or exclusive configurations — but they differ in scale and timing. Sprint Runs are pre-planned limited productions (typically 300–2,000 units) allocated in advance to specific authorized dealers. They are usually announced ahead of time and can be pre-ordered. Flash Batches are smaller, faster runs — sometimes under 500 units — produced quickly to use available materials and sold with little advance notice. Both sell out; Flash Batches typically faster. All three are premium American stainless steels from Crucible Industries. S30V is the proven baseline — excellent all-around performance that has been the production knife standard for over two decades. S45VN is a refinement of S30V with smaller carbide particles (using niobium instead of some vanadium), resulting in better toughness and easier sharpening without losing edge retention. Spyderco transitioned flagship models from S30V to S45VN beginning in 2021. CPM MagnaCut is the current cutting-edge option — engineered by metallurgist Larrin Thomas to lead in all three categories (edge retention, toughness, corrosion resistance) simultaneously. It appears in Sprint Runs and dealer-exclusive Spydercos where premium steel is the featured specification.

The Salt series is Spyderco's dedicated line of corrosion-resistant knives designed for marine, dive, fishing, and wet-environment use. Salt knives use H1 steel (a nitrogen-alloyed steel that is virtually rust-proof — it can be submerged in saltwater indefinitely without rusting), LC200N (a nitrogen stainless with better edge retention than H1 and equivalent corrosion resistance), or MagnaCut (in newer USA-made Salt variants). All Salt hardware is tested for corrosion resistance. If you need a knife that will live in a tackle box, on a boat, in a saltwater fishing environment, or anywhere moisture is constant, the Salt series is the right answer.
