The blade is CPM-D2, the Crucible Particle Metallurgy version of D2 tool steel. CPM-D2 improves on standard D2's toughness and carbide uniformity while retaining D2's exceptional wear resistance and edge retention — the upgrade matters in a compact blade where edge geometry tolerances are tighter. Like standard D2, CPM-D2 requires regular oiling and drying to prevent surface oxidation; the black coating reduces this exposure between maintenance sessions. The 3.00-inch blade clears carry-length restrictions in more jurisdictions than the full-size 9071's 3.60-inch blade without compromising the Claymore's AXIS Assist deployment speed or lock strength.
