The Benchmade Claymore 9071BK is the premium steel configuration of the full-size AXIS Assist Claymore folder — CPM-D2 tool steel with a black coating, plain drop point blade, and black Grivory handle, for buyers who want the Claymore's spring-assisted deployment and D2-tier edge retention with the metallurgical upgrade of Crucible's powder metallurgy process.

The blade is CPM-D2, the Crucible Particle Metallurgy version of D2. CPM-D2 improves on standard D2's toughness and carbide uniformity while retaining D2's exceptional wear resistance and edge retention — the same alloy upgrade relationship as CPM-154 to standard 154CM. This differentiates the 9071BK from the 9071SBK and 9071BK-1, which both use standard D2. Like standard D2, CPM-D2 requires regular oiling and drying to prevent surface oxidation; the black coating reduces exposure between maintenance cycles. Plain edge sharpens efficiently at home on a ceramic rod or leather strop. Black Grivory (glass-filled nylon) handle scales provide a uniform all-black carry profile — rigid, moisture-resistant. AXIS Assist deploys via thumb stud with spring assistance and closes one-handed with the AXIS Lock bilateral mechanism — not an automatic, legal where automatics are restricted.
