CPM S90V

CPM S90V Steel Knives: Crucible's High-Vanadium Premium Stainless for Extreme Edge Retention

CPM S90V is a Crucible powder metallurgy stainless steel engineered for one primary property: extreme edge retention. Its 9% vanadium content produces an exceptionally high volume of hard vanadium carbides — more than almost any other production stainless — giving CPM S90V wear resistance that outlasts CPM-S30V, CPM-S35VN, and CPM-S45VN by a significant margin. When Spyderco runs sprint editions in CPM S90V, when Benchmade puts it in Gold Class limited releases, and when Zero Tolerance features it in premium production runs, they are choosing it for one reason: this is the stainless that holds a working edge longer than almost anything else on the market.

At Knifeworks, you are buying from an authorized dealer: every CPM S90V knife on this page ships with full manufacturer warranty coverage — Benchmade's LifeSharp warranty (free lifetime sharpening, blade replacement, and mechanical repair), Spyderco's manufacturer warranty against defects, and Zero Tolerance's limited lifetime warranty. No gray-market sourcing, no voided warranties.

CPM S90V is corrosion-resistant enough for humid, wet, and sweat-heavy carry conditions — the ~14% chromium keeps it firmly in stainless territory. The tradeoff is sharpening: CPM S90V's vanadium carbide content makes it one of the hardest production stainless steels to sharpen with conventional abrasives. Diamond plates are not optional — they are the practical requirement. Once you have a fresh edge, you'll keep it longer than nearly any other stainless in the tier.

Why Spyderco, Benchmade, and Zero Tolerance spec CPM S90V for sprint runs and Gold Class releasesManufacturers who build premium limited editions choose CPM S90V when the goal is maximum edge retention in a stainless. At 59–61 HRC, CPM S90V holds a working edge through months of daily carry that would dull CPM-S35VN or CPM 20CV several times over. It is not a hard-use tactical steel — toughness is moderate — but for a folder that gets used and carried, sharpened once and then forgotten about for the season, CPM S90V is the deliberate choice. This is why it commands the premium price on Spyderco sprint runs and Benchmade Gold Class configurations.

What is CPM S90V steel?+

CPM S90V is a Crucible powder metallurgy stainless steel engineered for extreme edge retention. Its 9% vanadium content produces an exceptionally high volume of hard vanadium carbides — more than almost any other production stainless — giving it wear resistance that significantly exceeds CPM-S30V, CPM-S35VN, and CPM-S45VN. It sits in the ultra-premium stainless tier alongside CPM 15V and Vanax.

Is CPM S90V a stainless steel?+

Yes. CPM S90V runs approximately 14% chromium, which puts it firmly in stainless steel territory. It resists corrosion in humid, wet, and sweat-heavy carry conditions well enough that it does not require the maintenance carbon or tool steels demand. Unlike CPM 3V or 1095, CPM S90V does not develop patina and will not rust under normal use.

How does CPM S90V compare to CPM-S30V and CPM-S35VN?+

CPM S90V significantly outperforms both on edge retention. CPM-S30V and CPM-S35VN are excellent all-around stainless steels, but CPM S90V's higher vanadium content means it holds an edge several times longer under equivalent use. The tradeoff is sharpening difficulty — CPM S90V requires diamond abrasives where CPM-S30V and CPM-S35VN can be sharpened effectively on standard ceramic and even fine aluminum oxide stones.

How does CPM S90V compare to CPM MagnaCut?+

CPM S90V has higher peak edge retention. CPM MagnaCut has significantly better toughness and easier sharpening. Both are Crucible powder metallurgy stainless steels. If you want the absolute longest working edge in a folder that you rarely need to touch up, CPM S90V is the tier leader. If you want a stainless that balances edge retention, toughness, corrosion resistance, and reasonable sharpenability, CPM MagnaCut is the more versatile choice.

How do I sharpen CPM S90V?+

Diamond plates are the practical requirement. CPM S90V's vanadium carbide content is high enough that standard aluminum oxide stones will polish rather than cut — the softer matrix wears away while the harder carbides remain untouched. Diamond stones cut vanadium carbides cleanly. Guided systems like the Work Sharp Precision Adjust, Wicked Edge, or KME with diamond plates all work well. Finish with a diamond-compound strop at 1 micron or finer for the cleanest apex.

Does CPM S90V rust?+

Under normal use conditions, CPM S90V does not rust. The ~14% chromium content puts it in the very good corrosion resistance tier. Sweat, humidity, and light saltwater exposure will not affect the blade with normal wipe-down maintenance. Deep saltwater immersion for extended periods is the only realistic corrosion scenario, and even then damage is typically superficial.

Which knives come in CPM S90V?+

CPM S90V appears in premium production runs across multiple brands at Knifeworks. Spyderco features it in sprint editions of the Para Military 2, Para 3, Manix 2, and Native 5. Benchmade uses it in Gold Class limited releases and select premium Bugout and Bailout configurations. Zero Tolerance runs it in premium production models. Check the specific SKU's blade steel specification before assuming CPM S90V — it is typically a limited-run or premium-tier option, not standard production.

Why do collectors pay a premium for CPM S90V sprint runs and Gold Class releases?+

CPM S90V is one of the most expensive production knife steels to work with — the vanadium carbide content makes it difficult to grind, difficult to heat treat consistently, and difficult to finish. Manufacturers that spec CPM S90V are making a deliberate choice to prioritize edge retention over production cost, which is why it typically appears in limited sprint runs, Gold Class releases, and premium tier configurations rather than standard production lines. Collectors value it for both the performance and the scarcity.
