OTF stands for out-the-front — the blade deploys and retracts axially through an opening in the front of the handle rather than folding open like a conventional folder. On the Kershaw Livewire, push the slider on the spine forward to deploy the blade and push it back to retract. The blade locks positively when fully deployed and retracts cleanly on the return stroke. OTF automatic knives are subject to strict regulation under federal and state law. Under federal law, the interstate sale and transport of automatic knives — including OTF knives — is restricted. The 9000WGLD and 9000OLBW are the same Livewire OTF automatic platform — same CPM MagnaCut steel, same OTF slider deployment, same USA manufacture in Tualatin, Oregon. They differ in blade geometry, blade finish, and handle color. The 9000WGLD runs a drop point blade with gold PVD finish on a white anodized aluminum handle — the most collector-oriented colorway in the series, with the most durable blade coating and the most versatile everyday blade geometry. The 9000OLBW runs a spear point blade with blackwash finish on an olive green handle — a field-ready, low-profile carry combination. For the most visually distinctive piece with the hardest blade coating, the 9000WGLD. For the tactical field-carry combination, the 9000OLBW.

A drop point features a continuous curved spine that drops gradually to a strong, centered tip — the spine curves rather than ending at the same height as the edge, producing a lower, well-supported tip and a long, full belly along the edge. A spear point features a fully symmetrical profile with the tip precisely at the blade centerline and equal upper and lower bevels. In everyday OTF carry, both geometries perform well across the full range of cutting tasks. The drop point's slightly lower tip and longer belly give it a minor advantage on slicing-heavy tasks and food prep. The spear point's symmetrical profile gives it a slight advantage on tasks that require the blade centered on the work axis. The difference is modest in practice — both are versatile general-purpose geometries for an OTF knife.

Gold PVD (physical vapor deposition) bonds a titanium nitride or zirconium nitride layer to the blade surface at the molecular level under vacuum conditions — the PVD layer is harder than the underlying CPM MagnaCut steel and significantly harder than the black layer in a blackwash finish. In an OTF knife where the blade cycles through a housing channel with every deployment, that hardness difference is meaningful: the PVD coating resists contact wear inside the mechanism better than a softer blackwash coating, holds its appearance longer at the contact points, and provides a more durable corrosion barrier across the blade face. Gold PVD also holds its color better than most decorative coatings under carry conditions — it does not fade or oxidize the way painted or anodized finishes can. The trade-off is that PVD will show wear at the edge bevel with sharpening, which is normal and expected.

CPM MagnaCut was designed by metallurgist Larrin Thomas and produced by Crucible Industries to outperform both CPM-S35VN and M390 in edge retention, toughness, and corrosion resistance simultaneously. In an OTF knife, edge retention keeps the blade deployment-ready through more carry cycles before maintenance. CPM MagnaCut's near-H1 corrosion resistance is particularly relevant in an OTF platform where the blade travels through a housing channel that can accumulate moisture and debris — the gold PVD coating on the 9000WGLD adds another layer of protection on top of an already highly corrosion-resistant steel. Most production OTF knives run 154CM or D2 — CPM MagnaCut is a significant step up in all three performance categories.

Kershaw offers a lifetime warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. If the knife fails due to a manufacturing defect, Kershaw will repair or replace it at no charge. Normal wear, mechanism wear from sustained OTF cycling, cosmetic PVD finish wear at the blade bevel, sharpening, and damage from misuse are not covered.
