OTF stands for out-the-front — the blade deploys and retracts axially through an opening in the front of the handle rather than folding open like a conventional folder. On the Kershaw Livewire, push the slider on the spine forward to deploy the blade and push it back to retract. The blade locks positively when fully deployed and retracts cleanly on the return stroke. OTF automatic knives are subject to strict regulation under federal and state law. Under federal law, the interstate sale and transport of automatic knives — including OTF knives — is restricted. The 9000BLK and the baseline 9000 both use a black anodized aluminum handle and are fully blacked-out Livewire configurations, but they differ in blade finish. The 9000 runs a stonewash blade — natural bare CPM MagnaCut steel with no coating, matte and patina-developing over time. The 9000BLK runs a black PVD blade — a titanium nitride or zirconium nitride coating bonded at the molecular level under vacuum, harder than the blade steel itself, more adhesion-stable than any chemical conversion coating, and zero light reflectance. The 9000BLK is the fully unified blackout piece: black PVD blade and black anodized handle read as a single unit with no tonal variation. For natural bare steel with patina character, the 9000. For the most durable and complete blackout configuration, the 9000BLK.

Blackwash applies a stonewash texture to the blade first, then a black layer over the top that settles into the recesses and wears away at the high points — it reads as dark and low-profile but shows surface variation and grind geometry depth up close. Black PVD bonds a titanium nitride or zirconium nitride layer to the blade surface at the molecular level under vacuum conditions — harder than blackwash, harder than the underlying steel, more adhesion-stable, and more uniform. In an OTF housing mechanism where the blade cycles through a channel with every deployment, black PVD resists contact wear at the housing contact points better than blackwash under equivalent daily carry. The 9000BLK's black PVD blade holds its appearance and corrosion barrier longer than a blackwash blade under hard carry conditions.

CPM MagnaCut was designed by metallurgist Larrin Thomas and produced by Crucible Industries to outperform both CPM-S35VN and M390 in edge retention, toughness, and corrosion resistance simultaneously. In an OTF knife, edge retention keeps the blade deployment-ready through more carry cycles. Toughness supports the blade cycling under spring tension with every deployment. CPM MagnaCut's near-H1 corrosion resistance handles OTF housing moisture reliably — the black PVD coating adds a further hard barrier on top. Most production OTF knives run 154CM or D2 — CPM MagnaCut is a significant step up in all three categories.

OTF knives require more regular maintenance than folding knives because the housing mechanism accumulates pocket lint, debris, and moisture with daily carry. Periodically blow out debris with compressed air and apply a light coat of thin oil to the blade and mechanism. Avoid heavy oils that collect lint. The black anodized aluminum handle can be wiped clean with a damp cloth — standard cleaners and isopropyl alcohol are safe on anodized aluminum. The CPM MagnaCut blade sharpens readily on ceramic rods or fine diamond stones at the existing bevel angle — the PVD coating will show wear at the edge bevel with sharpening, which is normal and expected.

Kershaw offers a lifetime warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. If the knife fails due to a manufacturing defect, Kershaw will repair or replace it at no charge. Normal wear, mechanism wear from sustained OTF cycling, cosmetic PVD finish wear at the blade bevel, sharpening, and damage from misuse are not covered.
