Inside the handle, a hardened steel ball bearing sits in a polymer or steel cage, backed by a coil spring. When the blade is opened, that spring pushes the ball bearing forward until it wedges securely between a fixed backstrap on the handle and a ramped notch cut into the blade tang, locking the blade open under constant spring tension rather than friction alone.
