    How does the AXIS Lock work?+

    How does the AXIS Lock compare to a Liner Lock or Frame Lock?+

    Liner Locks and Frame Locks use a piece of the handle liner or scale that flexes over to block the blade from closing. Both require the user to reach across the blade path with the thumb to disengage the lock, and both are typically side-specific (right-handed). The AXIS Lock disengages from either side without crossing the blade path with the fingers — a genuinely safer and more ambidextrous mechanism. Frame Locks are generally stronger for hard-use scenarios; AXIS Locks are more convenient and safer for daily EDC use.

    How strong is the AXIS Lock?+

    The AXIS Lock is very strong — strong enough that Benchmade has used it in tactical and hard-use platforms like the Adamas, Bailout, and Nimravus AXIS. In independent testing, AXIS Locks routinely handle loads well beyond what an EDC folder would encounter in normal use. That said, the AXIS Lock is not designed for prying, chopping, or lateral stress; for those applications, a fixed blade or a heavy Frame Lock folder is the better choice.

    Can the omega springs fail? How do I fix them?+

    Omega springs can fail after very heavy use over years of ownership — typically indicated by the AXIS Lock feeling weak or the blade not dropping shut cleanly. When this happens, Benchmade's LifeSharp warranty covers factory service: send the knife back to Benchmade, and they replace the omega springs at no charge as part of a complete factory service. Most owners never experience an omega spring failure. Those who do get a factory refresh that brings the knife back to new condition.

    Which Benchmade knives use the AXIS Lock?+

    The AXIS Lock appears across most of Benchmade's core folder lineup at Knifeworks. Platforms include the Griptilian and Mini Griptilian, Bugout and Mini Bugout, Adamas (both folder and Shane Sibert Adamas), Osborne 940 and 940-1, Bailout, Nimravus AXIS, Barrage assisted, Nakamura, Sequel, and many limited or Gold Class editions.     Why is the AXIS Lock only on Benchmade knives?+

    The AXIS Lock was patented by Benchmade in 1998 and remained a Benchmade exclusive for the life of the patent. Since the patent expired around 2016, other manufacturers have released similar mechanisms — Hogue's ABLE Lock and SOG's ATAC Lock work on similar principles.
