Hard-Use Tactical Folders by Designer Rick Hinderer

Rick Hinderer grew up on a farm in Ohio, where he learned the value of tough, functional tools. He began his knifemaking journey over 30 years ago, starting out crafting high-end, custom art knives. His career shifted dramatically when he became a firefighter and EMT—realizing that standard folding knives weren't built to withstand the demands of first responders, such as prying open jammed panels, cutting thick webbing, or operating with heavy gloved hands, he re-engineered his approach entirely.

Operating out of “The Ranch” in Shreve, Ohio, Hinderer pioneered the modern hard-use tactical folder through his own Rick Hinderer Knives (RHK) manufacturing company, and brought his patented ergonomic and mechanical features to production scale through partnerships with Zero Tolerance, Kershaw, KA-BAR, and Gerber. Our premium selection showcases these overbuilt platforms utilizing thick titanium frame locks, heavy G-10 or Micarta scales, and elite blade steels like CPM MagnaCut and CPM-20CV, all built on the ergonomics of his famous XM-18 platform.

Hinderer's engineering runs deeper than the blade steel. His patented Lockbar Stabilizer (LBS) prevents the frame lock bar from over-traveling outward or slipping under heavy stress, and his Tri-Way Pivot System lets users switch between ceramic bearings, phosphor bronze washers, or Teflon washers. Classic hallmarks of his design language include the "Spanto" grind—a hybrid spear point and tanto tip built for both slicing and prying—plus user-replaceable scales, lockbar inserts, and hardware. Note: Hinderer is not affiliated with brands like Spyderco or CIVIVI. Browse our inventory to acquire a purpose-built, first-responder-grade tool engineered for hard use.

Knifeworks Pro Tip: Hinderer's Tri-Way Pivot System lets you tune the action to your preference—ceramic bearings for the fastest deployment, phosphor bronze washers for smooth everyday durability, or Teflon washers for quiet, low-maintenance use. Whichever you choose, keep the Lockbar Stabilizer and pivot area free of grit with compressed air, and only add a light oil drop to the pivot itself.
