DuraLock Knives: Kershaw’s Ambidextrous Crossbar Lock

The DuraLock is Kershaw's take on the crossbar lock, the mechanism family that became widely available across the industry once Benchmade's original AXIS Lock patent expired. A solid steel bar runs completely through the handle scales, and when the blade is opened, dual omega-shaped springs snap the bar forward into a deep notch cut into the base of the blade tang, wedging it into a rigid, self-contained lockup. Because the bar is manipulated entirely from the top of the handle, disengaging it never puts your fingers anywhere near the edge as the blade swings closed.

Kershaw built the DuraLock to deliver the same smooth, fidget-friendly action across every price tier it sells, from sub-$60 GFN-handled everyday carry folders up to its premium, USA-made Bel Air line. The dual-spring design applies balanced pressure to both sides of the blade tang, which eliminates the side-load drag that can make a lockup feel gritty, so the DuraLock opens and drops shut with a glassy, consistent action right out of the box.

At Knifeworks, the DuraLock spans Kershaw's full lineup: budget GFN-handled folders like the Sequence and Heist, mid-tier anodized-aluminum models like the Iridium and Mini Iridium, and premium CPM-MagnaCut folders like the Bareknuckle and the American-made Bel Air.

Why the DuraLock feels different from a standard crossbar lockThe dual omega springs are engineered specifically to keep pressure even across both sides of the tang, so the blade never binds or drags to one side as it opens or closes. Combined with a bar that runs the full width of the handle, the DuraLock stays exactly as smooth on knife number one hundred as it was on day one.

What is a DuraLock?+

The DuraLock is Kershaw's version of the crossbar lock, the mechanism family that spread across the industry once Benchmade's original AXIS Lock patent expired. A solid steel bar runs through the handle scales and locks into a notch in the blade tang when the knife is opened.

How does the DuraLock mechanism work?+

When the blade is opened, dual omega-shaped springs snap the crossbar forward into a deep notch cut into the base of the blade tang, wedging it into a rigid lockup. Pulling the bar rearward from the top of the handle withdraws it from the notch so the blade can swing closed.

Is the DuraLock safe to close with one hand?+

Yes. Because the lock bar is manipulated entirely from the top of the handle, your fingers are never in the path of the blade when you pull it back to close the knife.

Is the DuraLock stronger than a Liner Lock or Frame Lock?+

Crossbar-style locks like the DuraLock hold the blade through a hardened steel bar wedged into a machined notch rather than through spring tension on a liner or frame cutout, so the lockup stays tight and does not loosen with wear the way a Liner Lock or Frame Lock can over years of use.

Is the DuraLock ambidextrous?+

Yes. The crossbar spans the full width of the handle and can be pulled back with the thumb from either side, so the knife opens and closes the same way for right- and left-handed carry.

What steel and handle options does Kershaw use across its DuraLock knives?+

Kershaw spreads the DuraLock across every price tier: 8Cr13MoV and D2 steel with GFN or anodized-aluminum handles on its everyday carry models, up to CPM-MagnaCut steel with aluminum handles on its premium Bareknuckle and USA-made Bel Air lines.

Does Knifeworks carry Kershaw DuraLock knives?+
