The Monitor (2041), Covalent (2042), and Layup (2047) form the DuraLock GFN drop point family — all three share D2 steel, DuraLock crossbar lock, black GFN handle, drop point blade geometry, and manual or assisted thumb stud deployment. The differences are blade length, finish, and opening mechanism. The Monitor is the smallest at 3.0 inches with a black-oxide finish and manual deployment. If compact carry is the priority, the Monitor. If you want mid-size manual, the Covalent. If you want the largest blade with SpeedSafe, the Layup.

Black-oxide is a chemical conversion coating that reacts with the iron in the steel surface to form a thin, uniform layer of magnetite — black iron oxide — across the blade face. The process provides two benefits: a modest but meaningful corrosion barrier that protects the D2 steel from surface rust in normal carry conditions, and complete light suppression that eliminates reflective signature from the blade. Black-oxide is not as hard or adhesion-stable as PVD coatings, and it will show wear at the edge bevel with sharpening, which is expected. For daily carry, a wipe-down with blade oil after moisture exposure keeps the coating performing well over time.

DuraLock is Kershaw's crossbar locking system. A hardened steel crossbar passes laterally through the handle and drops into a notch in the blade tang when the blade reaches full open, locking it positively in place across a wide contact area. To close, push the crossbar from either side with your thumb — it clears the tang notch and the blade folds freely. The crossbar provides a wider, more stable lockup geometry than a standard Liner Lock and eliminates accidental lock disengagement from lateral blade pressure. The same hardware runs across the Monitor, Covalent, Layup, and full-size Iridium series.

D2 is a high-carbon, high-chromium tool steel — semi-stainless by composition but tool steel by performance. Its high carbide content gives it significantly better edge retention and wear resistance than the 8Cr13MoV common at this price tier. The trade-off is modest susceptibility to surface rust if left wet or stored in humid conditions without care. The black-oxide coating on the 2041 provides a functional barrier across the blade face. Wipe the blade dry after moisture exposure and apply a thin coat of blade oil before extended storage to maintain the exposed steel at the sharpened bevel.

Glass-filled nylon (GFN) is a reinforced polymer that is lighter than aluminum at equivalent size, provides inherent grip texture from the molded surface without requiring aggressive machining, and does not become slippery when wet the way smooth anodized aluminum can. For a compact carry knife where weight and grip in varied conditions matter, GFN is often the more practical choice. The trade-off is that GFN does not have the premium scratch resistance and solid feel of aluminum — it is a working handle material optimized for function and value over aesthetics.

The Monitor 2041 is a manual folding knife with thumb stud deployment — not assisted-opening, automatic, or OTF — which places it in the broadest legal carry category under most state laws.
