Spyderco — The Company That Reinvented the Folding Knife

In 1976, Sal and Gail Glesser converted a bread truck into a motorhome and drove across the country selling sharpeners at trade shows. By 1978 they had settled in Golden, Colorado, and by 1981 they had changed the knife industry forever. The C01 Worker — Spyderco's first production folding knife — introduced three features that are now so universal, most buyers don't know they came from one company: the Trademark Round Hole for one-handed opening, the pocket clip for tip-up carry, and the option of a serrated edge on a folding knife.

Before the Round Hole, pocket knives lived at the bottom of your pocket and required two hands to open. Spyderco changed both of those facts permanently. Sal Glesser was inducted into the Blade Magazine Cutlery Hall of Fame in 2000 for these contributions. Today Spyderco produces knives in Golden, Colorado; Seki City, Japan; Taichung, Taiwan; and Maniago, Italy — and the Round Hole is on every single one of them.

Knifeworks is an authorized Spyderco dealer, sourcing directly from Golden, Colorado. Every Spyderco we sell is 100% genuine. LifeSharp® sharpening service is fully honored on every knife purchased from Knifeworks. Questions? Call 888-225-9775 — our staff carries Spyderco daily.

Why Spyderco? The Three Innovations That Defined the Modern Folding Knife

Most features on your current EDC knife trace back to Spyderco. Three specific innovations — all introduced in 1981 with the C01 Worker — are now so ubiquitous they read as standard rather than invented:

  • The Trademark Round Hole™: A round hole in the blade spine allows the thumb to engage the blade directly, opening it one-handed with a simple roll or the now-famous Spydie Flick. Before this, one-handed opening required a nail nick and two hands. Every Spyderco knife — from the $30 Byrd Cara Cara to the $400 PM2 Sprint Run — has a Round Hole.
  • The pocket clip: Before Spyderco, pocket knives sat loose at the bottom of your pocket. The clip moved the knife to the top — immediately accessible, securely retained, and positioned for one-handed draw. The deep carry clip (hiding the entire knife in the pocket) is a later Spyderco refinement that the rest of the industry followed.
  • Serrations on a folding knife: Spyderco was the first company to offer serrated edges as a production option on a folding knife. The SpyderEdge serration pattern — aggressive, self-sharpening geometry — is still the standard against which other serration patterns are measured.
These three features are standard on thousands of knives from hundreds of brands. They originated with one company, in one small building in Golden, Colorado.
Where Are Spyderco Knives Made? Manufacturing Locations and What They Mean

Spyderco produces knives in four countries. Manufacturing origin affects price, materials access, and the specific designs available — but not quality standards, which are consistent across all facilities.

LocationWhat's Made ThereNotable Features
Golden, Colorado (USA)Paramilitary 2, Para 3, Shaman, Native 5/LW, Manix 2, Military, and Sprint Run / dealer-exclusive editionsSpyderco's flagship facility. Direct quality control enables the CQI (Constant Quality Improvement) process. Required for Sprint Runs using premium US-spec steels like CPM® SPY27™ and CPM-S45VN.
Seki City, JapanEndura 4, Delica 4, Dragonfly, Tenacious, Persistence, Resilience, Ikuchi, and Japanese collaboration modelsJapan has been the world center of production cutlery for centuries. Seki City knives represent Spyderco's accessible EDC lineup with consistent fit and finish at mid-range pricing.
Taichung, TaiwanChaparral, Smock, Lil Native, various Sprint Runs and collaboration modelsTaiwan production enables premium materials (carbon fiber, Fatcarbon, titanium) at accessible prices. Some of Spyderco's most design-forward models are Taiwan-made.
Maniago, ItalySpyderco's Italian collaboration modelsManiago is Italy's knife-making capital. Select collaborations with Italian makers are produced here.
Manufacturing location is listed on every Spyderco product page at Knifeworks. If you're specifically seeking USA-made Spyderco, filter by "Made in USA" or call 888-225-9775 — we'll help you find the right model.
The Core Lineup: Paramilitary 2, Para 3, Shaman, Native, Manix, Delica, Endura

Spyderco's catalog runs deep — over 200 active models. These are the most carried, most discussed, and most frequently recommended:

  • Paramilitary 2 (PM2): The flagship. 3.45" full-flat-ground blade, Compression Lock, G-10 handles, made in USA. The PM2 has been the most recommended EDC folder in the knife community for over a decade. In standard production in CPM-S30V; Sprint Runs in CPM-S45VN, CPM® SPY27™, and CPM MagnaCut.
  • Para 3: The PM2 scaled down to 2.95" blade. Same Compression Lock, same full-flat grind, USA-made. For buyers who want PM2-level performance in a more pocketable package.
  • Shaman: The PM2 scaled up — 3.58" blade, sculpted G-10 handles, Compression Lock. Built for buyers who want maximum blade in the Compression Lock platform.
  • Native 5 / Native 5 Lightweight: USA-made back lock. 2.95" blade, available in FRN or G-10. The Native is the back lock benchmark — simpler mechanism, extremely durable.
  • Manix 2: USA-made Ball Bearing Lock — a unique mechanism that uses a steel ball for ultra-smooth, rattle-free lockup. 3.37" blade, available in G-10 and Lightweight versions.
  • Delica 4: Japan-made. 2.88" blade, FRN handles, back lock. One of the most carried folding knives in the world — light, thin, and inexpensive.
  • Endura 4: Japan-made. The Delica's longer sibling at 3.75". Same FRN/back lock platform scaled up for buyers who want more blade.
Choosing between the PM2 and Para 3: The difference is blade length (3.45" vs 2.95") and overall carry size. The PM2 has more cutting belly and presence; the Para 3 disappears in the pocket. Both have identical lock mechanisms, handle geometry, and USA manufacturing.
Spyderco Lock Types — Compression Lock, Back Lock, Liner Lock, Ball Bearing Lock Explained

Spyderco uses multiple locking mechanisms across its lineup, and the choice affects both the strength of lockup and the closing method:

Lock TypeHow It WorksWhere It's UsedKey Advantage
Compression LockA split spring nested between the blade and stop pin — releases from the spine side, keeping fingers away from the blade path when closingParamilitary 2, Para 3, Shaman, Para Military 3Extremely strong lock; one-handed closing without fingers crossing the blade edge — the safest folder closing method available
Back LockRocker bar locks into blade notch at the spine; released by pressing the spine at the rear of the handleNative 5, Delica 4, Endura 4, MilitarySimple, proven, extremely durable; no side pressure on the lock during use
Liner LockSteel liner springs across blade tang to lock open; side pressure releasesVarious Spyderco models including Ikuchi, TenaciousIndustry standard; familiar to most knife users; ambidextrous options available
Ball Bearing Lock (BALL)A steel ball rides a ramp into a recess in the blade tang; released by pressing the lock barManix 2, Manix 2 LightweightRattle-free lockup; very smooth action; releases cleanly under one-handed operation
Slip JointNo positive lock — spring tension holds blade open or closed; no locking mechanismUK Penknife, Roadie, various international-market modelsLegal in restricted blade-law jurisdictions where locking knives are prohibited
Spyderco Steel Guide — CPM® SPY27™, CPM-S45VN, H1, LC200N, K390, and More

Spyderco has used more blade steels than any other production knife company. Here's how the current lineup breaks down:

SteelTypeWhere It AppearsCharacter
CPM® SPY27™Spyderco proprietary CPM stainlessPM2, Para 3 Sprint Runs; select exclusivesSpyderco's house steel — optimized balance of edge retention, toughness, and corrosion resistance. Finer carbide structure than CPM-S30V.
CPM-S45VNCrucible CPM stainlessPM2, Para 3, Shaman Sprint RunsSuccessor to CPM-S35VN. More chromium carbides for improved corrosion resistance; better toughness than S30V. Current Spyderco Sprint Run standard.
CPM-S30VCrucible CPM stainlessPM2, Para 3, Shaman standard productionThe standard production steel on Spyderco's USA-made flagships. Excellent real-world performance, widely available, easy to maintain.
CPM MagnaCutCrucible CPM stainless — ultra-premiumSelect Sprint Runs, dealer exclusives, UK Penknife Salt variantEngineered by metallurgist Larrin Thomas. Leads in all three categories simultaneously: edge retention, toughness, and corrosion resistance. Appears in Sprint Runs where premium steel is the headline specification.
H1Nitrogen-alloyed steel — non-rustingSalt series (Pacific Salt, Atlantic Salt, Ladybug Salt)Virtually rust-proof — can be submerged in saltwater indefinitely. Lower edge retention than stainless options; re-sharpens easily.
LC200NNitrogen stainless — non-rustingSalt series (Spydiechef Salt, UK Penknife Salt)Better edge retention than H1 with equivalent corrosion resistance. The upgrade within the Salt series for buyers who want sharper-holding performance in marine environments.
K390Bohler K390 tool steel — ultra-premium edge retentionSelect PM2, Para 3, Manix 2 Sprint RunsExceptional wear resistance and edge retention — among the best cutting performance steels in production use. Not stainless; requires maintenance. Collector-grade.
VG-10Japanese stainlessDelica 4, Endura 4, various Japan-made modelsJapanese workhorse steel. Good corrosion resistance, sharpenable, holds a working edge. Standard steel on Spyderco's Japan-made lineup.
Steel transition note: Spyderco transitioned its flagship USA models from CPM-S30V to CPM-S45VN starting in 2021. Standard production PM2, Para 3, and Shaman currently ship in S30V; Sprint Run and exclusive editions carry CPM-S45VN, CPM® SPY27™, or CPM MagnaCut.
Salt Series — Spyderco's Dedicated Line for Marine, Dive, and Wet-Environment Use

The Salt series is Spyderco's answer to a specific problem: standard stainless steels will rust in saltwater environments with enough exposure. H1 and LC200N — the two steels used in the Salt series — won't.

  • H1 steel: A nitrogen-alloyed steel with essentially zero carbon content. Because rust is an oxidation process requiring carbon, H1 cannot form rust — it can be submerged in saltwater for months without corrosion. Used in the Pacific Salt, Atlantic Salt, and Ladybug Salt.
  • LC200N (also called Z-Finit): A nitrogen stainless steel with better edge retention than H1 but equivalent corrosion resistance. Used in the Spydiechef Salt and UK Penknife Salt, where sharper-holding performance matters alongside the corrosion protection.
  • CPM MagnaCut: The newest Salt-series steel option, offering the best edge retention of the three while maintaining excellent corrosion resistance. Appears in select USA-made Salt variants.

The Salt series FRN handles are also fully corrosion-resistant — no exposed metal parts that can degrade in marine environments. The entire knife is built for wet, salty, dirty use without breakdown.

Who should buy Salt series: Divers, fishermen, kayakers, boaters, anyone working around saltwater regularly, or EDC buyers who live in high-humidity coastal areas and want zero rust maintenance. If you're not near saltwater, a standard stainless steel (VG-10, CPM-S30V) with basic care will serve equally well.
Sprint Runs, Flash Batches, and KW Exclusives — How Spyderco Limited Editions Work

Spyderco's limited-edition program is one of the most active in the industry. Understanding how it works helps you get the knives you actually want:

  • Sprint Run®: A limited production run of a standard model in a non-standard configuration — different steel, handle color, or material. Sprint Runs are announced in Spyderco's "Reveal" presentations (typically 2 per year) and allocated to dealers. Once stock is gone, it's gone. Examples: PM2 in CPM® SPY27™, Para 3 in CPM-S45VN Camo G-10, Meerkat in CPM® SPY27™ Cobalt Blue FRN.
  • Flash Batch™: A very small run, typically one-time production. Higher collectibility than a standard Sprint Run due to even lower quantity.
  • Dealer Exclusives: Sprint Runs produced exclusively for a single authorized dealer. These are the rarest Spyderco production knives. Knifeworks receives dealer-exclusive allocations — call 888-225-9775 to find out what's currently available or on the upcoming release calendar.
  • KW Exclusives: Spyderco configurations exclusive to Knifeworks. These carry the KW Exclusives designation on our site and cannot be purchased anywhere else. Monitor the KW Exclusives category for current availability.
Strategy for Sprint Run buyers: Don't wait for in-stock notification — the highest-demand Sprint Runs (PM2 in premium steel, Para 3 in unusual handle materials) frequently sell out in hours of release. Pre-order when the run is announced. Call 888-225-9775 as soon as you see a new Reveal posted on Spyderco's forums.
