Stonewash is a mechanical surface treatment that tumbles the titanium with abrasive media to create a matte, textured surface that exposes the metal's natural cool gray color. Unlike Black or Bronze anodizing, which use electrochemical processes to create a colored oxide layer on the titanium surface, stonewash leaves the titanium in its natural state with a textured finish. The result is a cooler, more natural gray appearance that reveals the metal itself rather than a color treatment. Stonewash titanium hides pocket wear, micro-scratches, and handling marks better than anodized finishes, and develops a progressively richer surface character with heavy carry as the textured surface acquires natural variation.

The 748 uses Benchmade’s AXIS lock — a hardened steel bar that rides in a channel milled through both handle scales and cams over the blade tang when the knife opens. Releasing it requires simultaneously pressing both sides of the lock bar inward, making it extremely resistant to accidental closure under lateral or spine pressure. The AXIS lock is fully ambidextrous and operable one-handed from either side.
