1095 carbon steel is a classic outdoor steel: tough, easy to sharpen in the field, and dependable under hard use. ESEE runs it at 55-57 HRC. The 1/8" thick, flat-ground blade slices thin for processing game and making tinder, while the partially serrated section near the handle helps cut through cordage, webbing, and other tough, fibrous materials. Sharpen the plain section as usual, and use a tapered ceramic rod or a sharpening system with corner edges for the serrations, working only the beveled side.
