The ESEE-5 is a heavy-duty survival knife that ESEE says was designed by military SERE instructors as a downed pilot's survival knife. This version pairs a 5.25" OD Green 1095 blade with tan Micarta handle scales and a black Kydex belt sheath.
1095 carbon steel is a classic choice for hard-use survival knives: tough, easy to sharpen in the field, and forgiving under heavy work. ESEE runs it at 55-57 HRC. At 0.25" thick with a saber grind, the blade keeps extra steel behind the edge for strength during chopping and other heavy tasks. Every ESEE-5 also has a sharpened glass breaker pommel and a bow drill divot in the handle for fire starting, and the tan Micarta has a warm, textured feel in the hand.
