Kershaw SpeedSafe uses a torsion bar spring mounted at the pivot. When the user pushes the thumb stud (or flips the flipper tab) to begin opening the blade, the torsion bar engages and drives the blade to the full-open position under spring pressure. Because the user must manually initiate the stroke, SpeedSafe knives are legally classified as manual folding knives, not automatics or switchblades — the spring only assists, it does not actuate. The result feels nearly as fast as an automatic but carries none of the legal restrictions.

The Kershaw Blur is legal to carry in virtually all U.S. jurisdictions that restrict switchblades and automatic knives, including most states and municipalities where automatic knives are prohibited. Always confirm the knife laws in your specific jurisdiction before carrying.

Sandvik 14C28N is a high-chromium stainless steel (14% Cr) with nitrogen enhancement (0.11% N) that improves corrosion resistance and allows the steel to be hardened to 58–62 HRC without sacrificing toughness. The nitrogen addition occupies grain boundaries that would otherwise be vulnerable to corrosion — a significant advantage for knives used in wet, blood-contact, or outdoor environments.

Edge retention is solid for daily use and significantly better than AUS-8. The steel sharpens extremely easily — it responds quickly to a ceramic rod or sharpening stone and holds a serviceable edge through heavy fieldwork. For a hunting and outdoor knife, it is a practical choice that prioritizes ease of field maintenance over maximum edge retention.

Kings Camo is a licensed camouflage brand founded by hunter and designer Randy Bartz. The Kings Camo pattern is engineered for western big-game hunting environments — using a photorealistic terrain blend of rocks, dirt, shadows, and vegetation in earth tones designed to break up the human silhouette in open terrain, mountain, and desert environments. Kings Camo is applied to hunting apparel, gear, and accessories under license.

On the Kershaw Blur 1670KC, the Kings Camo pattern is applied to the GFN (glass-filled nylon) handle scales. The pattern has no effect on the knife’s performance — the GFN/Trac-Tec construction is the same underneath the camo finish — but it makes the knife visually match the rest of a Kings Camo hunting kit and a natural choice for hunters who carry camo gear.

Trac-Tec is Kershaw’s proprietary grip enhancement system for GFN handles. Aluminum oxide particles are bonded into the handle scales to create a rough, textured surface with high friction against the skin — similar in concept to skateboard grip tape but more durable and less susceptible to filling with dirt, debris, or wet materials that can degrade softer rubberized inserts.

In field conditions — wet hands, blood, gloved grip — the Trac-Tec surface maintains grip security better than smooth GFN or rubberized overlays. It does not compress or degrade over time and requires no maintenance. The aluminum oxide surface is also resistant to UV degradation, which matters for a knife carried outdoors in sun exposure.

The Kershaw Blur measures approximately 7.875 inches overall when open and 4.5 inches closed. The drop-point blade is 3.4 inches long and approximately 0.14 inches thick, hollow ground. The knife weighs approximately 3.9 oz and carries on a reversible pocket clip in a tip-up configuration for either hand.

The Blur 1670KC is designed with hunting and outdoor use in mind. The 3.4-inch hollow-ground drop-point is well-suited to field dressing, skinning, and camp tasks — the hollow grind creates a thin, keen edge with good slicing ability. The Trac-Tec GFN handle maintains grip in wet, bloody, or cold conditions. The SpeedSafe mechanism provides fast one-hand access in the field.

14C28N stainless is particularly practical for hunting use because of its excellent corrosion resistance. Blood and moisture can accelerate corrosion on lesser steels; 14C28N holds up to field conditions and wipes clean easily. The stonewash blade finish conceals the scratches and marks that accumulate on a working knife over time.

The Kershaw Blur hollow grind is best maintained on a ceramic rod, sharpening rod, or whetstone. A 20-degree per side angle is appropriate for the factory edge and general outdoor use. In the field, a ceramic pocket rod touched to the edge at a consistent angle every few sessions will keep the blade working effectively for an entire hunt. Diamond stones are also appropriate for heavier re-profiling if the edge becomes significantly dulled.

Kershaw warrants every Kershaw-brand product to be free from defects in materials and workmanship for the lifetime of the original owner.
