Ram-Lok Knives: The Ambidextrous Crossbar Lock Behind Microtech's Manual Folders

The RAM-LOK is Microtech's proprietary ambidextrous locking mechanism — a spring-loaded steel crossbar that sits on top of the handle and drops into a notch machined into the blade tang, holding the blade open under real spring tension rather than friction. Engineered by Tony Marfione as an alternative to traditional liner and frame locks, the RAM-LOK does away with the side-mounted liner or scale altogether: the crossbar spans the full width of the handle, so the mechanism is symmetrical left-to-right and disengages identically from either side. Microtech builds this mechanism into its core manual folder platforms, most notably the MSI (Microtech Standard Issue) and the Stitch RAM-LOK, co-designed with Sebastijan Berenji of Borka Blades.

At Knifeworks, you are buying from an authorized Microtech dealer: every RAM-LOK knife on this page ships through legitimate distribution channels with full manufacturer warranty coverage intact. No gray-market sourcing, no voided warranties, no guessing whether the knife in your hand is what Microtech actually built.

The RAM-LOK's practical advantages compound in daily use. To close the knife, you press the crossbar down from either side with a thumb or finger, no reaching across the blade path required, no pinch points near the edge. Right-handed and left-handed users operate the knife identically, with no grip change needed to open, close, or disengage the lock. That symmetry is also what makes the RAM-LOK a strong choice for gloved or wet-hand use, where side-specific liner and frame locks become harder to actuate safely.

Why the RAM-LOK became Microtech's signature manual folder lockMost folder locks, liner locks and frame locks alike, are built for one dominant hand and require the thumb to cross into the blade path to release. Marfione's insight with the RAM-LOK was to move the release mechanism to the spine of the handle entirely, engaging and disengaging without repositioning the hand or crossing the edge. The result is a lock that is fast, ambidextrous, and easy to trust under stress — the reason it anchors Microtech's manual folder lineup rather than sitting as a novelty side option.

What is the RAM-LOK?+

The RAM-LOK is Microtech's proprietary ambidextrous locking mechanism, engineered by Tony Marfione. It uses a spring-loaded crossbar that sits on top of the handle and engages a notch in the blade tang, holding the blade open under spring tension. The lock is fully ambidextrous and allows one-handed opening and closing without a grip change. Microtech uses the RAM-LOK across its manual folder platforms, including the MSI and Stitch RAM-LOK.

How does the RAM-LOK work?+

When the blade is opened, the spring-loaded crossbar drops into a machined notch on the blade tang, locking the blade in the open position. To close the knife, the user presses the crossbar down from either side of the handle, disengaging the lock and allowing the blade to swing closed. Because the crossbar sits on top of the handle rather than the side, the mechanism is symmetrical and works identically for either hand.

Is the RAM-LOK ambidextrous?+

Yes. The RAM-LOK is fully ambidextrous by design, not just left-hand compatible with modifications. The crossbar spans the top of the handle and is accessible from both sides equally. Right-handed and left-handed users operate the knife identically, with no grip changes required for opening, closing, or lock disengagement.

How does the RAM-LOK compare to a Liner Lock or Frame Lock?+

Liner Locks and Frame Locks use a piece of the handle liner or scale that flexes over to block the blade from closing. Both require the user to reach across the blade path with the thumb to disengage the lock, and both are typically side-specific (right-handed). The RAM-LOK disengages from either side without crossing the blade path with the fingers, a safer and more ambidextrous mechanism. Frame Locks are generally favored for hard-use scenarios; RAM-LOK folders are prized for convenient, glove-friendly, symmetrical operation.

How strong is the RAM-LOK?+

The RAM-LOK is built for a strong, secure lockup, and Microtech uses it across manual folder platforms intended for daily and duty carry, including the Stitch RAM-LOK. As with any folding knife lock, it is not designed for prying, chopping, or lateral stress; for those applications, a fixed blade is the better choice.

Which Microtech knives use the RAM-LOK?+

The RAM-LOK appears across Microtech's manual folder lineup, most notably the MSI (Microtech Standard Issue) and the Stitch RAM-LOK, the latter co-designed with Sebastijan Berenji of Borka Blades. Marfione Custom Knives (MCK) also produces limited, hand-finished RAM-LOK variants with exotic steels and premium handle materials. Check the specific SKU's lock type before assuming RAM-LOK, since Microtech also produces OTF and other locking platforms.

Why is the RAM-LOK only on Microtech knives?+

The RAM-LOK is a patented mechanism developed by Tony Marfione specifically for Microtech, so it is not licensed or replicated by other manufacturers the way some older lock designs have been. When you see RAM-LOK on a folder, it is a Microtech or Marfione Custom Knives platform.
