Case Folding Knives

Case's Kinzua, Marilla, and Westline trade bone handles and nail-nick slip joints for anodized aluminum, textured G-10, and one-handed flipper deployment — modern construction built in the same Bradford, Pennsylvania factory that's turned out the Trapper and Peanut for generations.

At Knifeworks, you're buying from an authorized Case dealer: every knife here carries Case's Limited Lifetime Manufacturer's Warranty, in CPM-S35VN or CPM-20CV blade steel. Every knife locks: Kinzua and Marilla use a Frame Lock engaged with a one-handed flipper, while Westline uses a Liner Lock with spring-assisted, dual-thumb-stud deployment.

This is Case's first Modern Everyday Carry collection, in plain and partially serrated Drop Point blades, with ball bearing pivots and reversible deep-carry pocket clips throughout.

Is a Case Westline a switchblade? No — it's spring-assisted, which still requires you to push or pull the thumb stud to start the opening motion. A true automatic or switchblade opens from a button alone with no manual input.

The Case Folding Knives Buyer's Guide (2026)

What sets Case's modern Kinzua, Marilla, and Westline apart from its traditional patterns, and how to pick your lock and steel.

Case Goes Modern: Kinzua, Marilla & Westline+

Kinzua and Marilla mark Case's first Modern Everyday Carry collection, built in the same Bradford, Pennsylvania factory that's produced the company's slip-joint traditionals for generations. Instead of bone or stag over a nail-nick slip joint, these knives run anodized aluminum and G-10 handles over a locking mechanism with a steel ball bearing pivot and a one-handed flipper.

Westline rounds out the lineup with a spring-assisted Liner Lock design, trading the flipper for a dual thumb stud that starts the opening motion by hand before the spring finishes the swing.

Frame Lock vs. Liner Lock — How Kinzua/Marilla Differ From Westline+
ModelLock TypeOpening
KinzuaFrame LockOne-handed flipper
MarillaFrame LockOne-handed flipper
WestlineLiner LockSpring-assisted, dual thumb stud

A Frame Lock uses a cutout section of the handle's own steel or titanium frame to brace the blade when open. A Liner Lock uses a separate internal liner for the same job. Both are secure, widely used locking mechanisms; the practical difference here is how each knife opens, not how safely it locks.

TipWestline's spring assist still requires manual pressure on the thumb stud to begin opening — it is not a push-button automatic.
Blade Steel Guide — CPM-S35VN vs. CPM-20CV+
SteelEdge RetentionCorrosion Resistance
CPM-S35VNVery good, with strong toughnessGood
CPM-20CVExcellentExcellent

CPM-S35VN is a premium powder-metallurgy stainless steel built for a strong balance of toughness, edge retention, and ease of sharpening, and it's the steel used across most of this lineup. CPM-20CV is a higher-chromium, higher-vanadium powder steel generally regarded as a step up in both edge retention and corrosion resistance, at the cost of being somewhat slower to resharpen.

Handle Materials & Finishes — Anodized Aluminum, G-10 & Stonewash+

Kinzua runs a solid anodized aluminum handle in colors like Black, OD Green, and Blue, including an Eagle & Flag embellished edition. Marilla pairs anodized aluminum with textured black G-10 inlays for extra grip, and adds a lanyard hole for tethering. Blades across the lineup wear a Stonewashed finish, which resists showing scratches in daily use; one Marilla SKU instead ships with a black-coated blade for a stealthier look.

Choosing Your Blade — Plain vs. Partially Serrated Drop Point+

Every knife in this lineup carries a Drop Point blade: a rounded belly for longer, controlled cuts and a lowered spine that keeps the point strong for piercing. Most SKUs carry a plain edge, while select Kinzua and Marilla listings add a partially serrated section for cutting rope, strapping, and other fibrous materials a plain edge can struggle with. Westline's "Modified Drop Point" uses a flatter taper grind for extra blade strength near the tip.

Opening Mechanisms — Manual Flipper vs. Spring-Assisted+

Kinzua and Marilla open with a finger lever (flipper) riding on a steel ball bearing pivot — a flick of the index finger swings the blade open and locks it in one motion. Westline instead uses an ambidextrous dual thumb stud: you push the stud by hand to start the blade moving, and a spring finishes the opening for you. Both are manually initiated, one-handed mechanisms; neither is a push-button automatic.

Case Folding Knives: Frequently Asked Questions

Answers from Knifeworks' team on the Case Kinzua, Marilla, and Westline.

What is the best Case folding knife for everyday carry?+

The Kinzua or Marilla in CPM-S35VN with a plain-edge Drop Point blade covers the widest range of everyday tasks, with a Frame Lock and one-handed flipper for quick deployment. Choose Marilla if you want textured G-10 grip panels, or Kinzua for the lightest overall package.

What's the difference between the Kinzua, Marilla, and Westline?+

Kinzua and Marilla both use a Frame Lock opened with a one-handed flipper; Marilla adds textured G-10 handle inlays and a lanyard hole that Kinzua doesn't have. Westline uses a different mechanism entirely: a Liner Lock opened by a spring-assisted dual thumb stud rather than a flipper.

Is a Case Westline a switchblade?+

No. It's spring-assisted, which still requires you to manually push or pull the thumb stud to begin the opening motion before the spring finishes it. A true automatic or switchblade opens from a button press alone. Knife laws around assisted-opening and automatic knives vary by state and city, so confirm your local regulations before carrying.

What's the difference between CPM-S35VN and CPM-20CV steel?+

CPM-S35VN is a premium powder-metallurgy steel built for a strong balance of toughness, edge retention, and ease of sharpening. CPM-20CV carries higher chromium and vanadium content and is generally regarded as a step up in edge retention and corrosion resistance, though it can take somewhat longer to resharpen.

Is the Case Kinzua or Marilla legal to carry?+

Both are manually opened folding knives with a Frame Lock, which is permitted in most jurisdictions where ordinary folding knives are legal to carry. Some areas regulate blade length or flipper-style folders differently than traditional slip joints, so confirm your local knife laws before carrying.

How do I open a Kinzua or Marilla?+

Both use a flipper tab built into the spine near the pivot. A flick of the index finger against the flipper swings the blade open on its steel ball bearing pivot, and the Frame Lock engages automatically once the blade is fully open.

How do I care for the aluminum and G-10 handle?+

Anodized aluminum and G-10 don't need oiling the way bone or wood handles do. Wipe the handle down after heavy use and keep the pivot clean and lightly lubricated so the flipper and lock continue to operate smoothly.

What warranty comes with the Case Kinzua, Marilla, and Westline?+

Every knife in this collection carries Case's Limited Lifetime Manufacturer's Warranty, the same warranty backing the company's traditional patterns.
