DMT Sharpeners: The Diamond Sharpening Standard Since 1976 — No Oil, No Hollowing, No Compromise

Diamond Machining Technology was founded in 1976 in Massachusetts — originally as a manufacturer of grinding wheels. The breakthrough came when an engineer repurposed the center punch-out of a diamond grinding wheel and discovered it sharpened a knife faster, flatter, and more consistently than anything available. An L.L. Bean purchasing agent tested an early sample, recognized immediately what they had, and worked with DMT's engineers to refine the product. The result launched DMT as the industry standard in diamond sharpening technology — a position they have held for nearly five decades. Every DMT sharpener is made in Marlborough, Massachusetts from monocrystalline industrial diamond — the hardest abrasive material on earth — bonded to a precision nickel-plated steel substrate. No oil required. Guaranteed never to hollow or groove. More than 50 patents. Seven Blade Magazine Knife Accessory of the Year awards. The benchmark every other diamond sharpener is measured against. Knifeworks carries the full DMT lineup.

The DMT Story: How a Grinding Wheel Punch-Out Changed the Sharpening Industry+

In 1976, a Massachusetts manufacturer of industrial diamond grinding wheels made a discovery that would redefine knife sharpening. When a grinding wheel was punched out to create a center hole, the discarded diamond-coated disc was repurposed and tested on a knife edge. The result was faster, flatter, and more consistent sharpening than anything the market had ever seen.

An L.L. Bean purchasing agent received an early sample, tested it, and immediately recognized what DMT had. He worked directly with DMT's engineers to refine the product for consumer use. L.L. Bean became one of DMT's first customers — and remains one to this day. That single collaboration launched Diamond Machining Technology as the industry standard in diamond sharpening, a position they have held for nearly five decades.

What made DMT's sharpener revolutionary wasn't just the use of diamond — it was the precision of the process. DMT engineered monocrystalline industrial diamond particles onto a nickel-plated steel substrate with a density and uniformity no competitor could match. The result was a sharpener that:

  • Cut faster than any conventional stone
  • Never hollowed or grooved — maintaining a flat sharpening surface for the life of the product
  • Required no messy honing oil — water or dry only
  • Could sharpen any material, including ceramics, carbides, and hardened steel alloys that destroy conventional abrasives
  • 1976: Diamond Machining Technology founded in Massachusetts — industrial diamond grinding wheel manufacturer
  • Late 1970s: Grinding wheel punch-out repurposed as sharpener — L.L. Bean partnership refines the product
  • 1980s–2000s: 50+ patents granted, 125+ products introduced, 7 Blade Magazine Knife Accessory of the Year awards
  • 2016: DMT acquired by Acme United Corporation — Massachusetts facility maintained, full USA production continues
  • Today: The worldwide benchmark for manual diamond sharpening, trusted by knife makers, chefs, surgeons, and woodworkers across every professional and consumer market
Why Monocrystalline Diamond Is Different from Polycrystalline DMT uses monocrystalline diamond — single-crystal particles that maintain sharp cutting edges throughout their life. Cheaper diamond sharpeners use polycrystalline diamond (crushed diamond aggregate) whose particles shatter into duller fragments during use. Monocrystalline diamond cuts faster, lasts longer, and produces a finer edge. It is the same distinction that separates DMT from every lower-cost imitation on the market.
Why Diamond? Diamond Sharpeners vs. Whetstones, Ceramic Rods & Pull-Through Sharpeners+
Sharpener Type Abrasive Speed Flatness Steel Compatibility Lubrication Best For
DMT Diamond Monocrystalline diamond Fastest Guaranteed flat — never hollows All steels including carbides, ceramics, HSS Water or dry All users — the benchmark
Japanese Waterstone Aluminum oxide or silicon carbide Moderate Hollows with use — requires flattening Standard steels; struggles with very hard alloys Water (requires soaking) Traditionalists, Japanese kitchen knives, fine polishing
Dia-Sharp vs. DuoSharp vs. Diafold — Which DMT Format Is Right for You?+

Dia-Sharp® Bench Stone DuoSharp® Bench Stone Diafold® Folding Sharpener

Price Range $40–$120 $55–$130 $25–$55
First DMT? The DuoSharp Coarse/Fine Is the Most Popular Starting Point The DuoSharp gives you two grits in one stone — Coarse on one side to restore dull edges, Fine on the other to hone and refine. The interrupted surface collects swarf and stays clean through extended sharpening sessions. It covers the majority of what most knife owners need in a single product. Add the Extra Fine or Extra-Extra Fine stone when you want the finest possible edge.
Guided Sharpening: The DMT Aligner™ System — Consistent Angles Every Time+

Consistent angle is the single most important factor in sharpening — a beautiful technique applied at the wrong angle produces an inferior edge. DMT's Aligner system addresses this directly.

Aligner™ Blade Guide (ABG): A non-marring blade guide that clamps onto the spine of the knife and rides along the stone surface, maintaining a consistent angle throughout each stroke. Available in 7 angle settings covering the full range of knife and tool geometries — from Asian kitchen knives at 15° per side to heavy outdoor knives at 25° per side.

MAG Magnetic Angle Guide: A magnetic attachment for DMT's Diafold and bench stone formats that acts as an angle reference during freehand sharpening — not a full guide, but a training aid for developing consistent technique.

Aligner Pro Kit: Complete guided sharpening system — three 4" diamond stones in Coarse, Fine, and Extra Fine; a fine diamond serrated sharpening accessory; and the 7-angle Aligner Blade Guide. Everything needed to sharpen any knife from scratch to razor, with guidance at every stage. Stored in a compact rugged carry case.

Angle Setting Best For
10° per side (20° inclusive) Japanese kitchen knives, razors — very acute, maximum sharpness, delicate edge
15° per side (30° inclusive) Asian-style chef's knives, slicing knives, most Japanese production folders
20° per side (40° inclusive) Western kitchen knives, EDC folders, hunting knives — the most versatile angle
25° per side (50° inclusive) Heavy outdoor knives, fixed blades for hard use — more durable edge geometry
20° Per Side — The Starting Point for Most Knife Owners If you're not sure what angle your knife uses, 20° per side (40° inclusive) is the most versatile and forgiving angle for general EDC and kitchen knives. Most Western production knives from Benchmade, Spyderco, KA-BAR, and similar brands are factory-ground at 20–22° per side. When in doubt, start at 20° and your sharpening results will improve your current edge rather than working against it.
What Can a DMT Sharpen? Every Application Covered+

One of DMT's most underappreciated strengths is the range of materials and tools it can sharpen. Diamond is the hardest abrasive on earth — it cuts anything conventional stones cannot touch.

  • Pocket and EDC knives: All steels including super-steels (CPM-MagnaCut, S90V, M4, CruWear, ZDP-189) that defeat conventional abrasives
  • Kitchen knives: Carbon steel, stainless, and Japanese high-carbon — all at appropriate grits; Diafold flat file for serrated bread knives
  • Woodworking tools: Chisels and plane irons — the Dia-Sharp continuous surface is the preferred format for flat bevel woodworking tools
  • Hunting and fishing: Fixed blades, fillet knives, hunting knives, skinning knives — Diafold for field use, bench stones for shop use
  • Serrated edges: Diafold serrated sharpener or Honing Cones sharpen individual serration points; Aligner Pro Kit includes a serrated accessory
  • Carbide-tipped tools: Tungsten carbide, polycrystalline diamond inserts, and other industrial materials that destroy conventional abrasives
  • Ceramic knives: Diamond is one of the only abrasives that sharpens zirconia ceramic blades effectively
  • Scissors, garden tools, axes: DMT flat files and bench stones handle any bevel geometry
  • Ski and skate edges: DMT Diafold flat files are widely used for ski edge maintenance and speed-skate blade sharpening
  • Flatstoning waterstones: The DiaFlat lapping plate is the standard tool for flattening and truing conventional waterstones that have hollowed with use

DMT Sharpeners — Frequently Asked Questions

Expert answers from the team at Knifeworks — carrying the full DMT lineup including Dia-Sharp bench stones, DuoSharp, Diafold folding sharpeners, guided systems, lapping plates, and accessories.

What makes DMT different from other diamond sharpeners?+

DMT uses monocrystalline industrial diamond — single-crystal particles that maintain sharp cutting edges throughout their working life. Most competing diamond sharpeners use polycrystalline diamond (crushed aggregate) whose particles shatter into progressively duller fragments during use. The difference is measurable in cutting speed, surface life, and edge quality. DMT also engineers their diamond density to carry more diamonds per square inch than the industry average, and their nickel-plated steel substrate is precision-manufactured to maintain flatness — guaranteed never to hollow or groove. 50+ patents, 7 Blade Magazine Knife Accessory of the Year awards, and nearly five decades as the industry benchmark separate DMT from imitators.

Do DMT sharpeners require oil?+

No — DMT sharpeners require no honing oil. You can use them completely dry or with a small amount of water as a lubricant to flush swarf from the surface. Water works better than dry for extended sharpening sessions, keeping the surface cleaner and cutting more efficiently. Never use oil with a DMT diamond sharpener — oil can clog the diamond surface and reduce performance. This is a significant practical advantage over oil stones, which require messy petroleum-based lubricants and are difficult to clean.

What is the difference between Dia-Sharp and DuoSharp?+

Both are DMT bench stones made from the same monocrystalline diamond bonded to nickel-plated steel. The Dia-Sharp has a continuous (uninterrupted) diamond surface — ideal for woodworking tools like chisels and plane irons where maximum contact surface matters. The DuoSharp has an interrupted surface with a polka-dot pattern of recessed dots that collect swarf during sharpening, preventing clogging and keeping the surface cutting efficiently. DuoSharp also offers two different grits, one per side. For most knife users, the DuoSharp's swarf management and dual-grit convenience make it the better choice. For woodworking flat-bevel tools, the Dia-Sharp's uninterrupted surface is preferred.

What DMT grit should I start with?+

It depends on the condition of your edge. For a dull but undamaged knife, start with Coarse (red, 325 mesh) to restore the edge, then follow with Fine (green, 600 mesh) to hone. For a very sharp knife that just needs maintenance, Fine alone may be sufficient. For a damaged, chipped, or completely reprofiled edge, start with Extra Coarse (orange, 220 mesh) or Extra-Extra Coarse (black, 120 mesh). For the finest possible kitchen or collector edge, finish with Extra Fine (blue, 1200 mesh) or Extra-Extra Fine (purple, 8000 mesh). The DuoSharp Coarse/Fine gives you the two most commonly needed grits in a single stone and is the most popular starting point.

Can DMT sharpen serrated knives?+

Yes. DMT makes specific products for serrated edges. The Diafold Serrated Sharpener features a tapered oval diamond rod that fits into individual serration gullets to restore each tooth's edge. DMT's Honing Cones provide a conical sharpening surface for pointed serrations. The Aligner Pro Kit includes a fine diamond serrated sharpening accessory. Standard flat bench stones are not effective on fully serrated edges — use the purpose-built serrated tools for best results. Partially serrated edges (combo edges) can be sharpened with the flat surface on the plain portion and the serrated sharpener on the serrated section.

Are DMT sharpeners good for high-end knife steels like MagnaCut and S90V?+

Yes — diamond sharpening is actually the preferred method for premium and super steels. High-alloy steels like CPM-MagnaCut, S90V, M4, CPM-CruWear, and ZDP-189 are hard enough that conventional abrasives (aluminum oxide whetstones, ceramic rods) cut them very slowly and wear out quickly in the process. Monocrystalline diamond cuts all of these steels efficiently at full speed regardless of hardness. The harder the steel, the bigger the performance advantage of diamond over conventional sharpening. If you're running a Benchmade Freek in 20CV or a Demko MG AD20 in Cru-Wear, a DMT diamond stone is the correct sharpener.

What is the DMT DiaFlat lapping plate used for?+

The DiaFlat is a precision-flat diamond lapping plate designed to flatten and true conventional waterstones, oil stones, and other sharpening stones that have hollowed with use. A hollow stone produces a convex bevel on a knife rather than a flat one — which undermines edge geometry and makes subsequent sharpening less effective. The DiaFlat uses DMT's Diamond Hardcoat Technology to cut faster and last longer than any competitor lapping plate. It is also used to true the backs of chisels and plane irons, and to lap precision flat surfaces in tool maintenance and industrial applications.
