Which Helle knife was used on Survivorman?+

Les Stroud designed and used the Helle Temagami (HE1300) during several Survivorman episodes. Later, he developed and tested the compact Helle Mandra (HE1620) while living off the land in the Carpathian Mountains of Romania.

Can you strike a ferro rod with the Helle Temagami?+

Yes. The updated version of the Helle Temagami 14C28N features a sharp 90-degree spine directly out of the box, engineered specifically for striking ferrocerium fire-starting rods.

What does the name "Mandra" mean?+

The name Mandra is a Romanian word meaning "proud." Les Stroud named the knife in honor of the local mountain rescue teams who assisted him while filming in the Romanian Alps.

What is the difference between the Helle Temagami and Helle Wabakimi?+

The Temagami is a larger primary bushcraft knife featuring a 4.33-inch blade and a semi-full tang handle, whereas the Wabakimi is a more compact secondary knife featuring a 3.14-inch blade and a full-tang handle designed for fine detail carving.

What makes the Les Stroud collaboration series different from other Helle knives?+

Every knife in this series was field-tested directly by Les Stroud during Survivorman filming, resulting in real-world refinements like modified full-tang construction and 90-degree ferro rod spines not found on Helle's traditional stick-tang models.

Which Les Stroud Helle knife is best for a first bushcraft knife?+

The Helle Temagami (HE1300) is the best starting point as Les Stroud's flagship primary bushcraft design, offering a balanced 4.33-inch blade for heavy woodcarving, skinning, and fire prep.

Is the Helle Mandra F6 good for backup or neck carry?+

Yes. At 2.72 inches, the Mandra F6 (HE1620) is the smallest Les Stroud design, built as a lightweight neck or belt knife for trail carry and emergency detail cutting.
