Product Description
The Sage 5 Lightweight C123PGY pairs Spyderco's lightweight Compression Lock folder with a 3.0" blade in Micro-Melt Maxamet, one of the hardest steels in production knives. Gray FRN scales mark Spyderco's Maxamet family.
Micro-Melt Maxamet is a tool steel from Carpenter Technology, originally formulated to roll red-hot steel billets in Carpenter's own mills. In a knife, that means extreme hardness and wear resistance, so the edge keeps cutting through cardboard, tape, and cord long after most knife steels have dulled. Spyderco says it is the only knife company to have mastered Maxamet well enough to feature it prominently in production knives. The thin 0.118" blade is full-flat ground with a satin finish for clean slicing. The trade-off is maintenance: it isn't stainless, and it takes diamond or CBN abrasives to sharpen.
- Blade: 3.0" Micro-Melt Maxamet leaf-shaped blade with a 2.64" PlainEdge, full-flat grind, satin finish, 0.118" thick.
- Handle: Gray injection-molded FRN with Bi-Directional Texture, over nested, skeletonized stainless steel liners; 4.17" closed, 3.0 oz.
- Deployment + Lock: Spyderco Trademark Round Hole for one-handed opening; the Compression Lock releases from the spine side, so your fingers stay clear of the closing blade.
- Carry: Reversible deep-pocket wire clip for tip-up carry on the right or left side; 7.13" overall.
Ideal for: steel enthusiasts who want to test Maxamet's edge retention in daily carry; EDC carriers who want a light 3-inch folder; and collectors of Spyderco's Sage Series and specialty steels.
Care note: Micro-Melt Maxamet is a tool steel, not a stainless steel. It can rust or stain, so wipe it clean and dry after use and keep a light coat of oil on the blade.
The Spyderco Sage 5 Lightweight in Micro-Melt Maxamet with gray FRN (C123PGY) ships same or next business day from Columbia, Louisiana. Knifeworks is an authorized Spyderco dealer.
Spyderco Sage 5 Lightweight Maxamet: Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the most common questions about the Spyderco Sage 5 Lightweight Maxamet (C123PGY).
What lock does the Spyderco Sage 5 Lightweight C123PGY use?+
The Sage 5 Lightweight uses Spyderco's own Compression Lock, built into the nested, skeletonized stainless steel liners. When the knife is open, a leaf spring in the liner wedges between the blade tang and the stop pin. You release it from the spine side of the handle with one hand, which keeps your fingers out of the blade's path as it closes.
What is Micro-Melt Maxamet steel?+
Micro-Melt Maxamet is a tool steel from Carpenter Technology, originally formulated to roll red-hot steel billets in Carpenter's steel mills. It is known for extreme hardness and wear resistance, so it holds a working edge far longer than most knife steels. Spyderco says it is the only knife company to have mastered Maxamet well enough to feature it prominently in production knives, and it marks its Maxamet knives with a gray handle color.
How do I care for and sharpen a Maxamet blade?+
Micro-Melt Maxamet is not a stainless steel, so it can rust or stain if left wet or dirty. Wipe the blade clean and dry after use, especially after cutting food or handling it with sweaty hands, and keep a light coat of oil on it. Because it is so hard and wear resistant, it is slow to sharpen on conventional stones, so diamond or CBN abrasives work best.
What is the Sage Series, and does it support a charity?+
Spyderco created the Sage Series to showcase folding-knife lock mechanisms and their inventors, and the Sage 5 highlights Spyderco's own Compression Lock. Spyderco says it donates approximately 5 percent of sales of the Sage line to the Alzheimer's Association Colorado Chapter, which supports care, support, and research for families affected by Alzheimer's disease.
What comes with the Sage 5 Lightweight C123PGY?+
The C123PGY ships as a knife with its reversible deep-pocket wire clip installed. It is knife only, with no sheath included. Packaging and included items are set by Spyderco and are subject to change.
