Benchmade — Family-Owned American Precision Since 1979

Les de Asis started building butterfly knives in his California garage in 1979 under the name Bali-Song, chasing tighter tolerances and better materials than anything on the market. The company became Pacific Cutlery, then in 1988 took the name it carries today: Benchmade — a nod to "bench-made" quality, built one knife at a time by people who cared about the details. In 1990, the company relocated to Oregon City, Oregon, where it still operates from a single 144,000-square-foot facility.

Benchmade remains family-owned. After Les de Asis passed in 2020, leadership transferred to his wife Roberta and son Jon, who run the company today. There is no parent corporation, no outside investors dictating margins — every decision on steel, design, and manufacturing happens in Oregon City. In 1999, Benchmade introduced the AXIS® Lock on the Model 710, a patented mechanism that redefined what a folding knife lock could do — and over 25 years later it remains the standard other locks are measured against.

Knifeworks is an authorized Benchmade dealer. Every knife we sell is 100% genuine, fully eligible for LifeSharp® service and Benchmade's warranty. Questions? Call 888-225-9775 — our staff carries Benchmade daily.

The AXIS® Lock — Why It Changed the Industry

Before the AXIS® Lock, folding knife security came down to two choices: a liner lock (simple, but releases under fingers in the blade path) or a back lock (strong, but slow to operate one-handed). In 1999, designers Bill McHenry and Jason Williams brought Benchmade a third option, and Benchmade — already known for precision machining — was the manufacturer they trusted to build it correctly.

The AXIS® mechanism uses a hardened steel crossbar spanning both stainless steel liners, driven by two proprietary Omega-style springs that engage a deep notch in the blade tang. Pulling the bar back disengages the lock from either side, making it fully ambidextrous. Unlike a liner lock or frame lock, there's no side pressure wearing on a single contact point — the AXIS® Lock is rated to withstand significant lateral pressure and tends to maintain lockup integrity rather than loosen with use.

  • Ambidextrous: Operates identically with either hand — no "off-hand fumbling" required.
  • Safe closing geometry: Fingers stay clear of the blade edge when closing, unlike liner locks that require fingers near the cutting edge.
  • Built to last: Every AXIS® Lock knife is hand-assembled at the Oregon City facility under the same quality control that's kept the mechanism reliable for over 25 years.
Where you'll find it: AXIS® Lock spans Benchmade's manual folders (Bugout®, Osborne®, Bailout®), AXIS® Assist models (Barrage®, PSK™) for faster one-handed deployment, and AXIS® Auto push-button automatics (Auto Adamas®, Auto Presidio® II) — all running the same core lockup technology.
Bugout®, Griptilian®, Osborne® — The Core EDC Lineup

Benchmade's catalog spans tactical, hunting, and rescue tools, but three models anchor the everyday carry lineup more than any others:

Model Blade / Weight Best For
Bugout® (535) 3.24" blade, 1.85 oz — one of the lightest full-size folders made Buyers who want serious cutting performance they barely feel in the pocket. Grivory® handle standard; Gold Class and special editions add premium materials.
Mini Bugout® 2.82" blade, scaled-down Bugout platform Same ultralight philosophy in a more compact package for smaller pockets or hands.
Griptilian® (551) 3.45" blade, CPM-S30V, Noryl GTX or Grivory® handle The benchmark EDC folder for over two decades — comfortable in hand, dependable, widely recommended as a first "good knife."
Mini Griptilian® Scaled-down Griptilian platform Buyers who want Griptilian ergonomics in a smaller carry footprint.
Osborne® (940) 3.4" reverse-tanto blade, CPM-S30V; carbon fiber 940-1 in CPM-S90V Warren Osborne's reverse-tanto geometry pierces well and resists tip breakage. Over two decades in continuous production — a community favorite.
Choosing between the Bugout and Griptilian: The Bugout prioritizes weight — it disappears in the pocket. The Griptilian prioritizes hand-fill and a more substantial grip. Both run the AXIS® Lock and are made in Oregon City; the decision comes down to whether ultralight carry or in-hand presence matters more to you.
Benchmade Gold Class — The Premium Materials Tier

Gold Class is Benchmade's top materials tier — the same proven platforms (Bugout, Griptilian, Osborne, and select others) built with premium steels, exotic handle materials, and elevated fit and finish. Gold Class is not a different knife; it's the same trusted geometry executed with no compromises on materials.

  • Premium steels: CPM-S90V and CPM-MagnaCut appear regularly in Gold Class releases — both significant upgrades over the standard CPM-S30V in edge retention and, for MagnaCut, corrosion resistance as well.
  • Handle materials: Carbon fiber, titanium, and exotic configurations replace the standard Grivory® or G10 handles found on base models.
  • Limited production: Gold Class releases are produced in smaller runs than standard catalog models, making them more collectible.
Gold Class is the right tier for buyers who already know they want a Benchmade platform (Bugout, Griptilian, 940) and are deciding whether to step up in materials. It is not a different knife philosophy — it's the same engineering, built without compromise.
Made in Oregon City — What "USA-Made" Actually Means at Benchmade

Benchmade manufactures its entire catalog at a single 144,000-square-foot facility on Beavercreek Road in Oregon City, Oregon. There is no overseas production line, no secondary "budget" factory — every Benchmade knife, from the entry-level Griptilian to the premium Gold Class releases, comes from the same building.

The facility houses CNC machining, laser cutting, heat treating, hand-fitting, and final hand-sharpening under one roof. Over 400 employees work across these processes, with tolerances held as tight as 0.005 inches. This vertical integration is part of why Benchmade has stayed family-owned rather than selling to a larger conglomerate that might push manufacturing offshore to cut costs — keeping production in Oregon City is treated as core to the brand's identity, not just a marketing point.

Family ownership and single-facility production are connected facts: Benchmade can make decisions about steel, tolerances, and design without pressure from outside shareholders demanding offshore cost-cutting. That's a direct line from "who owns the company" to "what you're actually buying."
Benchmade Steel Guide — CPM-S30V, CPM-S90V, CPM-MagnaCut, CPM-M4

Benchmade's steel lineup is smaller and more curated than some competitors — a deliberate choice that favors proven performance over constant new releases:

SteelTierCharacter
CPM-S30VStandard productionDeveloped by Crucible in collaboration with Chris Reeve specifically as a pocket knife steel. Balanced strength, toughness, corrosion resistance, and edge retention — Benchmade's most common steel across the Bugout, Griptilian, and Osborne standard lineup.
CPM-S90VPremium / Gold ClassA precursor to S30V with significantly higher vanadium content. Hardened to 59-61 HRC with superior edge retention, at the cost of being harder to grind and sharpen. Used in carbon fiber 940-1 and select Gold Class releases.
CPM-MagnaCutPremium / Gold ClassModern powder-metallurgy steel engineered for balanced edge retention, toughness, and corrosion resistance simultaneously. Appears in current EDC collection releases and select Gold Class editions.
CPM-M4Hard-use / Super Freek tierVery high wear resistance, not stainless — requires more maintenance than S30V but offers exceptional edge holding for hard-use applications.
Why Benchmade doesn't chase every new steel release: The brand has stayed deliberately concentrated on a small number of proven steels rather than releasing dozens of limited variants. CPM-S30V remains the standard-tier workhorse for a reason — it's a known quantity that performs reliably across EDC use cases.
LifeSharp® Service and Benchmade's Warranty — What's Covered

Benchmade backs every knife with a limited lifetime warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. This is a defect-based warranty — it covers manufacturing flaws, not damage from misuse, normal wear, or modification.

LifeSharp® is a separate benefit from the warranty. Even a knife with zero defects, used hard for years, qualifies for LifeSharp® re-sharpening at any point in its life. This is one of the strongest post-purchase service commitments in the production knife industry — direct from the people who built it.

Knifeworks fully honors LifeSharp® and Benchmade's warranty on every knife purchased from us as an authorized dealer. Confirm current terms at benchmade.com before relying on specific claim details — policies can be updated by Benchmade at any time.
Benchmade Lock Types Beyond AXIS® — Where Else the Brand Innovates

While AXIS® is Benchmade's signature mechanism, the brand also produces knives using other lock types depending on the model's design intent:

  • AXIS® Lock: The flagship mechanism across most manual EDC folders — Bugout®, Griptilian®, Osborne®, Bailout®.
  • AXIS® Assist: A spring-assisted version of AXIS® for faster one-handed deployment without crossing into automatic-knife legal territory. Found on the Barrage® and PSK™.
  • AXIS® Auto: Push-button automatic deployment using the same AXIS® lockup strength. Found on the Auto Adamas® and Auto Presidio® II — true automatics, subject to state and local knife laws.
  • Bali-Song® (Butterfly): Benchmade's origin product line. The company still manufactures patented Bali-Song butterfly knives, a direct continuation of the brand's 1979 founding product.
Legal note on automatics: AXIS® Auto models are true automatic knives. Automatic knife ownership and carry laws vary significantly by state and locality. Confirm your local regulations before purchasing an automatic model.
