    What is the difference between Helle H3LS and H3LC steel?+

    H3LS stands for Helle Triple-Laminated Stainless steel, using a high-carbon stainless core surrounded by stainless outer layers. H3LC uses a pure high-carbon core with non-stainless outer layers, offering slightly higher sharpness and traditional patina for carbon steel enthusiasts.

    Why can you see a line running along the edge of a Helle knife?+

    That visible line, called the lamination line, marks the transition where the softer outer stainless steel ends and the hard, darker inner carbon steel core is exposed at the cutting edge. It is proof of true three-layer forge-welded construction.

    Can a triple-laminated steel blade chip or break?+

    Because the hard core is supported on both sides by soft, shock-absorbing stainless steel, Helle laminated blades are extraordinarily chip-resistant and flexible under heavy prying compared to solid single-alloy blades.

    How do you sharpen Helle H3LS triple-laminated steel?+

    Place the bevel of the zero-Scandi grind flat against a stone and push forward. Because the soft outer walls grind away easily, you can quickly hone the exposed hard center core back to a razor edge without needing specialized high-angle guides.

    Which Helle knife uses H3LC carbon steel instead of stainless?+

    The Helle Viking (HE96) uses H3LC Laminated Carbon steel rather than stainless, a recreation of a historic 10th-century Viking blade forged with a traditional carbon steel core.

    Is Helle's laminated steel used on folding knives too?+

    Yes. The Helle Bleja Folder (HE625) brings the same H3LS Triple-Laminated Stainless steel used on Helle's fixed blades into a full-size back-lock folder with a pocket-friendly footprint.

    Can I buy a Helle blade with triple-laminated steel before it is handled?+

    Yes. The Helle #310 Gaupe Blank (HE310) is a pre-drilled, full-tang, un-handled H3LS blade blank, letting custom knife builders work with Helle's laminated steel directly.
