It uses a streamlined version of Spyderco's Compression Lock. A leaf spring set into the spine of the handle wedges against the blade tang to hold the blade open; to close it, press the exposed spring toward the opposite side. The lock works the same in either hand, and the blade opens one-handed with the Spyderco Round Hole.

SpyderEdge is Spyderco's fully serrated edge pattern. The serrations bite into rope, webbing, cordage, and other fibrous materials, especially with a sawing or pulling cut. For clean push cuts and fine slicing, a PlainEdge blade is the better fit.

Use ceramic rods, such as a triangle-rod system like Spyderco's Sharpmaker, and sharpen the serrations on the corner of the rod; a flat stone won't reach into the scallops. CTS BD1N sharpens without much difficulty, so occasional touch-ups keep it working well.

Spyderco replaces the G-10 scales with injection-molded FRN and uses a streamlined Compression Lock, which it says trims the knife's weight by more than 25 percent. The FRN scales carry Spyderco's Bi-Directional Texture for a non-slip grip, and the knife weighs 2.8 oz.

The deep-pocket wire clip is reversible for tip-up carry on either side of the body, and the handle has a generously sized lanyard hole. The knife ships with its clip installed; this is a knife-only listing, so no sheath is included. Packaging and contents are set by Spyderco and are subject to change.
